So, after last week’s post, I’ve decided to write about something lighter this week that more people could relate to: keeping the flame alive! After seven years you would imagine how difficult it might be to still like each other, just kidding! It’s actually quite simple.
When Michael and I first started dating we had very little in common. He was part of that skater/music crowd, and me, I was part of the sports crowd. Our interests did not match up but for some odd reason we were crazy about each other. I guess what they say is true, opposites do attract. He completed the part of me that was missing and obviously I complimented him in whatever he was lacking. Fast forward to today, after learning seven years worth of crap about each other, the good, the bad and definitely the ugly, we go together like chocolate and peanut butter, of course we’re amazing together. Today we have so much in common, we basically taught each other what the other one was missing and now we couldn’t be better.
So anyway, how do we keep it going? Since we both work obscene hours and shifts at work, I will admit it is super difficult to find time to go out. But, at night, I always make sure we get at least an hour of laughter in a night. So if you’re like us, finding a new show to binge watch before you go to bed is a great thing. We chose New Girl, and we laugh and cackle until we pass out. And every time we shut the iPad off, we’re like “God, we love this show.”
Another thing, we make sure our days off sync up. So right now it’s Tuesday’s, and unfortunately I’m still in college so it has to wait until 4 pm, but Tuesday’s are our days to go out and adventure. One day a week is extremely important to spend together when you’re super busy. Right now since we are wedding planning, we enjoy going thrift store shopping for things we need to decorate our wedding. We go through the store pulling out ridiculous clothes, ugly furniture and just joking with each other the entire time. You wouldn’t believe that they actually have underwear and packages of adult diapers up for grabs in this thrift store, I think that’s our favorite part to laugh at. And then of course we end the night with dinner, but it’s important to splurge when you do go out to dinner, enjoy that 4 course meal with your lover! We also love doing outdoorsy things, like going hunting or fishing, exploring South Street in Philly, walking on the beach, as long as there’s some sort of nature involved, it’s not only fun but can be romantic too!
Lastly, once a month we try to have off an entire day on a weekend to spend together. On those days we try to road trip to somewhere we have never been. Sometimes, we include other couples like our good friends Keith and Olga, we thoroughly enjoy the company of another couple who shares similar interests as us. We have been all over with them, and it does add the cherry on top that Olga is a photographer so we get a few cute moments on camera. We’ve done Long Beach Island, Batsto Village, NYC, any place we can explore and enjoy the company, we are there.
If you’re looking for ways to keep the flame burning, just going out and trying something new has got to be the best way to keep the love alive. Doing things he likes to do, like visiting 400 music stores looking at guitars all day, or playing airosoft, or doing things she likes to do, like taking a billion cute pictures, or laying on the beach, the little things are what add up. You don’t have to spend tons of money of a day out either, some of the best things are free, explore the streets of Philly, take a ride to a light house, putts around at the mall, as long as you’re spending time together it doesn’t matter. You have to be best friends first, lovers second, because what better friend do you need than the one who will be standing by your side for the rest of your life? I love my best friend and it doesn’t hurt that soon enough he’s going to be my husband!
Sound off in the comments of things YOU love to do with your significant other!
Don’t forget to leave me something you want to read about! This week goes out to Sam, I hope this was everything you wanted it to be!
